Dunsdon National Nature Reserve (Adjoining)

Dunsdon contains probably the single most important example in England of a type of pasture known locally as Culm grassland. Culm grassland is a marshy, heathy vegetation that occurs over the slates and shales of the Culm Measures across north western Devon. It is a very diverse wildlife habitat, often extremely rich in wild flowers and supporting an immense range of other wildlife. Great for a nature ramble.

Ruby Trail (Holsworthy 11 miles)

The Ruby Country is a beautiful, tranquil, clean, un-spoilt and undiscovered area in the heart of rural Devon. Enclosed by Dartmoor, Exmoor and the north coast of Devon and Cornwall, Ruby Country is the ideal base for a magical, relaxing visit to the West Country. Tamar Lakes (Bradworthy 2 ½ miles)

The Upper Tamar with brand new watersports centre offers sailing, windsurfing and kayaking for individuals, families and groups. With a café facility on site, and popular 3 mile lake walk. At the Lower Tamar you will find a much smaller lake with easy going footpaths. The Lower Lake is predominantly managed as a nature reserve as it is popular with many wildfowl. Cookworthy Forest (Holsworthy 11miles)

Cookworthy Forest is an impressive conifer plantation in the gentle hills of West Devon, between Okehampton and Bude. With access to the Ruby Trail. This is an ideal location for walking and exploring. It also has a rather impressive round house.

Vacations in War Horse Country

The setting of Dartmoor in beautiful Devon plays host to Michael Morpurgo’s story, of Joey the "War Horse, with the film that has followed bringing the glory of the English countryside to a worldwide audience. The film showcasing, Devon's dramatically and beautiful Dartmoor National Park, where some of the original book was set. 'There's no place like it in the world,' said director Steven Spielberg. Dartmoor National Park at 368 square miles, is Southern England’s wildest, most rugged expanse of open country, and is known for the native Dartmoor ponies, who have run free for thousands of years.
Dartmoor is known for its tors, with more than 160 hills having the name Tor in their name and being topped with outcrops of boulder shaped granite bedrock.
The Dartmoor National Park is easily accessible from Dunsdon Farm in North Devon and will take around 35 to 40 minutes by car to get to Okehampton on the edge of the Park.
